bishop's words were like empty shells of what they could have been. they must have been spoken, thought of, enough times to lose their meaning. but to effy, they were new and fresh and scraped her ears like a thousand needles. she regarded him silently, letting the words fall off of his tongue and flitter across the room, hesitant thoughts that became more than just that- and grew into meaningful words that would affect more than just his trapped brain.
effy didn't want to point out the lack of love in her life. if you were alone, there was no one to give love to, and you lost it. it was like a habit, a skill. if you stopped riding your bike you would eventually forget how to balance. if you stopped loving you would forget what that could have meant. effy was first and foremost alone, and with that came the fearlessness that allowed her to give no damns. she didn't care whether she lived or not, and sometimes she wondered how it would be to just disappear, fall away, turn to dust and be carried away by the wind. she blinked thoughtfully, letting her head rest against the wall as she continued to gaze neutrally at bishop in the shroud of his own thoughts on the other end of the room.
"if fear is for survival, where does that leave those without it?" she murmured, a smile filled with too much knowledge of the ugly the world could have plastered upon her face. she knew. it would leave them dead, alone. fearless could not love, and they were alone. the fearful were too afraid to reach out- condemning themselves to solitude. "every living creature dies alone." the words hung in the air like spikes, daring the pair to touch them, disect them. her gaze narrowed then, and she leaned forward a little, using her hands to keep herself in an upright position.
"you mean to say fear for others. that's what it would take to love." she stated, the words pulled from ther throat before she knew what she was saying. "to care enough to fear for them." her blue eyes gleamed, flashing with the reflections of her own feelings. her eyes were mirrors to her soul- there was nothing she could keep from them. it was a gift and a curse, she supposed. she never dwelled on it. "i could learn that. i could not learn to fear for myself." she paused now, her head turning slightly as she stared, unblinkingly, at bishop. "what about you?"
