Jasper crossed his arms over his chest, eyes looking straight ahead. Normally he was hardly ‘business only’, and getting distracted far more easily than most people. Nonsense was how he got through the day, after all. It was hardly an ‘adult’ or professional attitude, as far as a lot of people he knew were concerned. Not that he cared, anyway. No. people at Hogwarts these days were far too serious about anything. They were all focused on classes, OWLs, NEWTs, and the ‘foreboding war’. He understood the first three. They were all pretty interchangeable, as far as Jasper Gray was concerned. But war? War was a dangerous word, and its connotation was getting seriously over used these days. Sure, things weren’t absolutely perfect in the world. Crime was on the uprising, and people were getting murdered left and right. Murdered – oh, how Jasper hated the word. It was so horrible. He could hear the action going along with it; the ‘m’ started it, building up pressure behind his lips. The two ‘r’s’, stuck between the letter ‘d’ on both sides rolled without stop, like blood falling from a dying body. Jasper clenched his eyes shut, trying not to think about it. Murder was such a horrible thing to talk about, much less think about. It was a serious and egregious crime. The fact that it was happening all over the place did not change that. It was more common, but that was all. He hated all this talk of dark things, all of the whispers of war and crying young men and women in the night, missing people that would never return to comfort them, no matter how much their souls might want to. That was why he was having such a hard time believing that it was a good time for pranks and optimism. It just seemed out of place, that was all. There was a time and place for everything, and yes, even Jasper Xavier Gray knew that. After opening his eyes again, he saw her. She looked amazing, beautiful – absolutely kissable. Jasper struggled to find words, and instead found himself sighing in complete happiness at the sight of his girlfriend. Katherine Edgecombe looked like a vision of Aphrodite herself, wearing a blue dress and grey legging-tight-things, with a purple jacket. Her hair was a combination of fancy (ish) and messy, and she was wearing heels and gloves. For a second, he was confused. They were simply going out for a day, and it was hardly an occasion to dress up for. Jasper didn’t have money for today (he had borrowed from his parents, though he did despise doing so), and was simply planning on taking her out for ice cream or something. But she looked like she expected much more. Katherine Edgecombe, Jasper remembered, was from a different walk of life than he was. She was a Pureblood girl, grown up with the elite of London themselves. When she heard ‘date’, she probably heard something completely different than what he meant. She was probably expecting something fancy. In his mind, he counted the money that he had with him. If he were lucky, he would have enough to take her out to a nice lunch, and an ice cream afterwards. If they were lucky, they could go shopping, and he could buy her something, like all the boys did in the romance novels he was reading for tips. If not, they could have a sandwich for dinner, or return to Hogwarts. They’d have to see how it worked out. He wrapped his arms around Katherine’s waist, pulling her even closer. “Why, hullo there, darling. You look absolutely impeccable.”
